The cardinal points of the compass is an idea that I have had for a while, but with the holidays it was just to busy to turn it into a reality.

This is the reproduction map of our town that we got while in the city for our anniversary. My Handy Man (my husband) framed it in a beautiful piece of poplar. I love how it fits into the room and has meaning behind it...
We framed one of my husband's aeronautical maps of the Puget Sound in fence paneling. I love that it has a rustic feel to it. The map provided the perfect color, so it was a must for the room!

Our son loves to plant his apple seeds every time that he eats an apple. The amazing thing is that they actually grow!..................................................................................
I'm very happy with how it all turned out! The space is comfortable and cozy while still being fresh and bright. We were able to try something new for us by installing the board and batten and my vision for the compass turned out just as I had hoped. The family room and kitchen now feel like they actually fit in with the rest of the house. The disjointed feeling that the rooms had before wasn't something that I was willing to settle for. I think I accomplished a theme without it being "in your face" or over the top. This room acts as a true "family room" on a daily basis, so I needed to achieve the balance of functioning for my kids while still being a beautiful space for me! It was very time consuming and exhausting since I had to paint almost non-stop to get it done, but in the end the hard work is always worth the effort! And now I can finally say that this room is done!

Seriously...it looks amazing. And by the way, I have just spent my entire evening looking at all your HGTV rate my space pics AND links from your blog to others...I'm really just trying to get my juices flowing...I think I need some of yours though...I CANNOT accessorize...oh....there are so many things I want to do!
I was looking at your before pictures thinking how pretty your home was. Then when I saw your after, WOW! It really knocked my socks off. I love everything! The colors, the writing on the wall. There was too much to take in, I know I'm missing something. I didn't think it could get any better and then I would go to the next picture and be blown away all over again. You are so talented!
Wendy

Absolutely beautiful! All your hard work paid off it has such a warm custom feel. Enjoy your new room.
I LOVE THIS ROOM! What color did you use? I've seen that blue on other blogs and I finally realized what room in my house it would go in (don't know why it took me awhile - it's the one room that's still WHITE!). You did a beautiful job!
Your home is gorgeous!
Karla - that is incredible. It looks FABULOUS! I love the color and how bright and comfortable it feels. I am with Wendy - your before photos were lovely, but the after photos are wonderful. That is a lot of work - you are an inspiration my friend~

Oh this is GORGEOUS!! Could you share your blue paint color and brand? Those are the colors I'm wanting to do in my office, I have about 8 samples up on the wall and still can't find the "right" color.
Thanks!!

I'm a little behind here and just now saw this post, but I love it! Now I'm looking around, trying to figure out how I can incorporate some of that board and batten in my own house!
Hi, I just stumbled across your blog - love your transformations!!
I also love the wall color in your family room and your living room - are they the same color?? I am looking for a great blue like that for my TV room - could you tell me what the name and brand of your blue is so I can copy?? :)
Thanks!
Hi SaraG - the color in the family room is my favorite! It is by Benjamin Moore and it is called "Wedgewood Gray" #HC-146. The color in the living room is also by Benjamin Moore, but it is one shade lighter from the family room. It is called "Woodlawn Blue" #HC-147. I have both of them shown on my side bar so that you can see the difference between them.
Hope that helps!
~Karla
I love your house! The "beachy" look and colors is just perfect!
I never get tired of seeing this transformation. I just love it. So much so in fact that I am planning on doing this in our house. I just hope that it looks as good as yours does.

All of your projects turn out so amazing! I thought your before was pretty but then the after...just wow! I love the color choices, beautiful.
I love, love, love the after. The colors are perfect. I also like the latitude and longitude.
Love this makeover. These are exactly the colors I was going for in my family room and can't seem to get the green/blue just right. What color did you use? I'm putting my makeover on my blog over the next few days including my mistakes! I hope mine turns out as awesome as yours. Melissa www.csc-melissa.blogspot.com

GORGEOUS! I would like to know the wall color too?
wow that's the cutest room I've ever seen! amazing details. I love it!
Wow, I'm glad I stumbled upon your blog! Your home is beautiful, and inspiring! Do you think white board and batten would look odd next to natural maple trim/baseboards? Our rear entryway has a built-in wood topped bench (natural maple) that I would love to install the board and batten above with hooks. The bench is unfinished under/beneath it, otherwise I'd love to remove it. Thanks!
I have just come across this and had to leave a comment to say that your room looks fantastic - I love it!
The board and batten idea is one that I am seriously going to use whenever I get a chance and I love the compass point etc.
You created a really stylish classy room - well done!
I love the batten board makeover! I happened upon your site when googling "how to install batten board"! I want do the same thing, use our existing walls in our nursery as the "boards" and just install the battens with a nice trim ledge on the top! The instructions you gave were awesome, but will you explain a little more how you dressed up the ledge on the top of the horizontal trim piece? I think that will be the most challenging part for me. Thank you, and again, beautiful room!
OMG! I LOVE it! I found you on HGTV site someone commented on my Old World Map and directed me to your post...I can't wait to add this to my decor
Thanks!

I just have to tell you I am a huge blog stalker (I hate the term but what can you do when it is so true) and I have seen many rooms in blogland and this is my absolute favorite family room! So unique, I love the special touches, such as the cardinal points of the compass. Amazing!
I'm on the verge of installing board & batten in my first floor railroad plan living space and have to ask: after 2+ years now living with this wall treatment, are you still loving it? Any regrets?
Thanks,
Linda
