A New Life For A Tired, Old Headboard...

Remember the "Free Stuff" Headboard that I found on the side of the road?

My husband declared it a piece of junk and couldn't figure out why I would even bother wasting time on it...

But, persistence pays off!

Look at it now!

I love how it turned out!

My husband built onto it creating a very sturdy bench that spans nearly 5 & 1/2 feet!

Once he was done building, I painted it white and distressed the old and new wood. I stained the exposed new wood to make it look more uniform in the "worn" spots.

Then it got a couple coats of poly, so that it could sit outside on our deck...

I have wire bins that slide underneath holding beach towels for the kids...

I'm tempted to take a picture of it and leave it on the doorstep of the house that the headboard came from! Just so they can see that it didn't go to waste. You know, like that show Junk Brothers where the guys take "Free Stuff" junk, give it a makeover and then take it back the following night so the owner's can enjoy it again!

Except....I won't be giving this back.

I like it too much!

Once again, much love and thanks to my handy-carpenter-husband for making something great!

Do you know that once I got it painted he actually said "wow...it would have been a pretty headboard" to which I had to reply "See! I told you so!"

When will he learn?

So what about you? Find any good junk lately?

....................................................

Be sure to head over to Between Naps On The Porch to see even more makeovers in this week's Metamorphosis Monday! And if you feel so inclined, add one of your makeovers to the list!

Many thanks to Susan for hosting this weekly event!

Beautiful job! My Pottery Barn friends would pay thousands of dollars for a bench like that! It's always satisfying when said friends come over and compliment my rehabbed used/thrift store furniture.

This is perfect. We have a head board that has been sitting in our garage FOREVER. I hate to get rid of a things I think "I can do something with this", and now I (really my husband) can. Off to show him your post.

That's quite incredible! Because of this post and your amazing headboard-into-bench transformation, I got a headboard today at a garage sale.

I was later and a lot of stuff was gone. I was checking it out, they were loading it all up to take to goodwill. The man says "I'll load it up for you right now, if you'll just take this. I don't want to take it to goodwill. It did have a tag on it of $10 so I said "how much do you want for it?" He said, "nothing, I just want it gone." I was like "Really? O.k. "

My dh wasn't very happy about this but I'm using your post for inspiration. Mine is quite a bit different but I'm still so excited about it!

Thanks for sharing it!

Karla, thanks for the link to this post. What a FANTASTIC project!!! And such great vision -- who would have thought to turn a headboard into a bench?!

Funny, as I read your post, I was thinking that it sounded just like an episode of Junk Brothers!! They're from here in Ottawa, and they picked up a piece of garbage from a friend's curb and re-did it on an episode of their show. And one of the JBs (Jim) worked at the Home Depot near our house last winter :-)

Once again, great job, Karla!! You and your hubby should start your own furniture refurbishing business!!

I think my favorite part was that you got to say I told you so. It is all about vision isn't it?
How wonderful that turned out for the both of you. Your hubby did a great job on it.
He should be very proud of himself.
Great post!

Karla,

Just getting ready to blog about a bench I made from an old headboard and wanted to give credit where credit is due. I saw your post among some others on headboards turned into frames. Do you mind if I link to your post? If you don't mind, I'd love to show one of your pictures too.

I love it when somebody takes something that didn't look very good when it was brand new and turns it into something cool that really deserves a place on the planet! You and your DH make a good team. :)

Thank you for this post! I just found a bedroom set at a garage sale for a great deal, but I bought it more for the drawers and hutch...I was trying to figure out if I could turn the headboard into a couch or something, and this helped visualize it. Urban Outfitters has some really neat floor cushions that could be a nice padding on something like this.
