................................................
I am working on a project with a client to give her living room a new look. She likes "beachy", so we're adding small touches, here and there, to make it feel fresh and new!
When I saw this...
...I knew it was the perfect inspiration and I had to recreate it in my own way, specifically for her living room!I found these shadowbox frames at Target for $12.99 a piece...
I bought 5 bags:
two bags of medium sized shells
two bags of small shells
and one bag of tiny shells...
Total cost for all 5 bags: $12.40
I started filling the frames with the medium sized shells and left out those that were too large for me to put the frame back together...
I used the back side of the sheet of paper that came in the frame to create my background.
It was white, so it worked perfectly...
Once I had the back of my frame securely in place, I lifted the shadowbox to let the shells settle into place and to see where any gaps may have been created.
You can see here where the "holes" appeared...
So I removed the back of the frame again and started adding in more of the tiny shells. I filled every possible gap and was able to get a lot more shells in than I had thought was possible...
I checked and rechecked to make sure that I was filling in every single space!
I wanted the frames filled to the brim so that only shells would be visible and not the white background!
I repeated the entire process with the second frame and for
less than $40
and only about 30 minutes of time, I was able to give my client two pieces of custom artwork that fit the "beachy" criteria perfectly!
The only problem is....I like them so much that I want some for myself!
But I am going to try and resist!
At least for a little while...
My Carpenter is in the garage, as I type this, putting the finishing touches on two benches that are going in my client's living room too. I love how they are turning out and can't wait to see them after they are stained and sitting in their new home!
And just between you and me, that has got to be the only downfall to having a husband that can build things for clients...
he's so good at it - I want one of everything he makes!
Off to start staining...

Hi Karla,
You sea shell project is awesome. I am going to have to give that a try. It means a trip to the beach for me!
I certainly understand what you said about the benches. I am a vendor in a great shop and the things I find to resale sometimes take me a long while to turn loose of. I mean shouldn't I get to enjoy them too. lol
YOUR.....sea shell project....
I knew I should have proof read my comment.....lol
Great project! And the other accessories are wonderful, too! Would you to see a picture of this finished room if your client will allow it! :-)
Thanks for sharing this great project!
Amy
I LOVE this idea! I'll have to borrow it very soon. I also really like the idea of the rocks in the original photo too. What fun and so thrifty!
Daryl

Lovely! We won't be at the beach this year, but my brother and sis-in-law promised to bring me back some shells. I love this project!
Such a great idea!
I love it, Karla. I would have never thought to do that. Thanks for sharing.
Those are beautiful and a deal. What an impact they make.
I'm emailing this to my Mom....she has collected at least a billion shells over the years :)
Wow, what a great idea, I love it! I'll be linking.
I think this is awesome. I was trying to figure out what to do with all the sea shells I have collected over the years and this is wonderful!
Thanks for such an inspiration!
I love beachy, too, and will have to do this!
What a great idea! And I've walked by that pillow at freddie's more than once-and keep coming back to it. I love it!
What a great project! Love that inspiration photo too, I might have to borrow this idea too :)
A shadow box filled with shells..., brilliant!!!
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it.
What a fab idea!! Love it!
Cute idea!
I love this! This is great for all those shells collected in the beach :) Can I use one of the pictures for my next "Sem Palavras"? I'll credit you of course.
Great idea! Now I know what to do with those seashells that I bought @ Michael's...knowing that I'd find something to do with them! LOL!
A great project and love the idea. Ballard Designs has some shell picture frames that are outrageously priced. This is much better!
I'm so stealing that idea...how creative. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! I have been trying to figure out what direction I want to go with my bathroom and this is it! I love the shadowboxes! Can you tell me what store you bought all the shells from?
I absolutely LOVE this! I thnk instead of a paper background I'm going to put another piece of glass & hang them in the window! So lovely, thanks!
