Christmas Lights: A Drive And A Little Inspiration...

Night #1 of this year's Tradition

......................................................

Last night we decided that every Sunday night of this Christmas Season, we will take the kids for a drive to look at Christmas lights.

(Something that we're actually able to plan for under the circumstances this year.)

So we headed to a favorite local neighborhood to start the tradition off right.

The kids loved it!

I did too!

And, as always, this neighborhood didn't disappoint.

Here are some of our favorites:

It probably goes without saying, but these next two houses got the most

ooh's
and ahhh's

from the kids...

We took a spin through our neighborhood before heading home to tuck the kids into bed and loved what was done on this house...

We spent the day after Thanksgiving putting up our outdoor lights.

Well, actually....

Will spent the day after Thanksgiving putting up our outdoor lights while I went through box after box after box of Christmas decor inside the house, but...

after seeing all of the lighted houses last night, we can home, tweaked ours just a bit, and we now have it exactly how we want it.

I just need to get the front porch decorated and then I'll show you what we've done.

So how about you?

Spot any good Christmas light inspiration of your own this year?

P.S. I am posting this as inspiration over at the DIY Show Off's Holiday Highlight's Party

and at A Soft Place To Land for DIY Day

These houses belong in a magazine. Your pictures turned out spectacular. I have never been able to get a decent night picture.
I cannot wait to see your house!

I remember doing this same thing with my parents every year when I was a child. It always felt so magical!

Wow... Love how your neck of the woods goes all out with the lights. To fun! :)

Wow, they certainly go all out for the holidays. We don't do quite that much around here, we tend to stick to candles in all the windows, lights around doorways & banisters. My light bill is thankful. Can't wait to see what you've done in your home.

Those houses are beautiful. Thanks for sharing them. I think that is a great tradition. We usually go once a year, but I think it would be a lot of fun to try once a week, picking a new neighborhood each time.

Beautiful photos! We have done the outside of our home, but still have a bit of tweaking to do. We are now starting on the inside. We take our girls (now 16 and almost 20) out after Christmas Eve dinner each year for the annual "Christmas Light Drive" in their jammies!! They have even managed to get mom and dad to wear our Christmas PJs too!!

Traditions are so important for kids, especially the ones that are not based on $$.
Our house gets fewer decorations outside every year but more inside. Reason? My husband has to do the outside.

One of my favorites things about this time of year is the pretty lights. I'm entertained for hours with a glowing Christmas tree and I love driving around looking at the houses. These are beautiful!

Thanks for sharing in the DIY holiday party!

I love driving around to look at Christmas lights. Looks like you have some real eye candy to check out. :) There aren't a whole lot up in our area yet...I guess all the DC commuters will wait for the weekend. ;) I'm wishing we could afford the electric bill to do outside lights, but we'll settle for candles in the window for now. :) Loved the pictures today!

I wanted to thank you for the inspiration behind my third grade son's "turkey" book report! When I showed him the picture on your blog, he was so excited to make him (so was I!). Thank you for your beautiful posts and inspirational pictures. Here is my little guy's project. He had to include the main idea of his book on the turkey's body, facts on his feathers. Being from the sweetest place one earth, Hershey, we had to fill with Hershey kisses. (plus Daddy works for the Hershey Co.!)

Oh Darn, I tried to attach a picture for you and couldn't! Do you have another email I could send the picture to?

Thanks again for your beautiful pictures!

BEAUTIFUL!!! I would LOVE to live in the city and see all the pretty houses. We live in a small rural *hole in the wall*, some houses are decorated quite alot, but nothing like these. Thanks for sharing. What a great memory your children will have. ;-)

Very inspiring! How do you take photos in the dark without a flash washing it all out? Thank you! This has been baffling me all week.

Thanks for all of your comments, everyone! :)

Rauna, I would love to see your photos. You can send them to ItsTheLittleThings(at)HomeRestyle(dot)net.

{L}, I'm convinced it was luck that the pictures came out so clear! Honestly, I just set it to the no flash setting, stopped the car, rolled down the window, crossed my fingers and hoped for the best! :)

Karla, I'm up in S. Bellevue and always looking for a good neighborhood light display to cruise. They seem to be disappearing up here. Would you mind sharing the name of that neighborhood or e-mailing it to me at heidi.bz@gmail.com? Thanks! :-)

I go to that neighborhood every year sometimes 2 or 3 times. It never gets old. It was nice to see you at the bazaar the other weekend. As soon as I get my blog up for the handbags I'll give you a jingle!!!!!
