The Hardwoods Are Finished...

Project "Goodbye Nasty Carpet, Hello Hardwoods" in our Family Room ended up taking three solid days.

Day 1:

Remove baseboards

Remove carpet

Remove carpet pad

Clean up all debris left on the sub-floor

and

Nail down all of the nail heads that had managed to work their way up over the past 15 years...

Day 2 & 3:

Lay all of the new pre-finished hardwood flooring that we got off of Craigslist...

Sorting through it all and trying to lay it in a way that didn't look like a pattern was the hardest part. We were told that the boards were "random lengths", but as we found out, they weren't so random at all. Making it all appear non-uniform was harder than we thought it would be.

We wrapped up at the end of day 3 finished with the floors, baseboards put back in place and the room looking pretty much like this...

Will was exhausted from doing all of the labor himself and we both crawled into bed with a whole new level of respect and appreciation for tradesmen!

To say that we love the new floors would be a huge understatement...

They're shiny and beautiful and the absolute best part...

We no longer have to worry about spills on the carpet when the kids eat at the counter and...

wet shoes when the kids come in from the backyard are now no big deal...

I'll show you a Before & After comparison soon, but I'm still working on the layout of the room and tweaking a few things here and there. I need to do some touch-up painting along the baseboards and get all of the curtains hung.
(I got some new panels for a steal, I tell you! Can't wait to see them in place!)

Now that it's finished we can definitely say that it was a heck of a lot of work, but a

whole lotta worth it!

They look great! We only have one more room to go upstairs...I am so ready to be done. Staggering the boards is the hardest part! Great job!!

The best thing we ever did was to put down hardwood and get rid of the carpets.
It is especially good now that our labrador dog is 13 and peeing all the time. I can't imagine the smell if we had carpets down.
Now fair warning...take a deep breath for the first time there is a big scratch or dent in your beautiful new floors. It will happen at some point and you just need to think of it as aging/patina to get through it.
Ours happened before we were done with the slip of a hammer. We had gone too far to go back and remove the offending board. Sigh.

Beautiful! Lots of hard work, but I'm sure you will enjoy it for years. I loved getting the carpet out of my living room and halls. Now I want it out of the bedrooms as well.

Wow, great job! The hardwood floors look GREAT!! I can't wait until we rip our carpet out and put in hardwood floors too. Unfortunately, I'm the clumsiest of our home. There have been many spills =(
Hope you enjoy your shiny new floor! =) It looks beautiful!

What a transformation! We are wanting to install more wood flooring too, but I'm not ready to foot the bill to refinish my existing wood that isn't very old...it looks like you had existing wood to tie into...how does the transition look?

Oh, those floors are beautiful! You did a great job, I'm very impressed. We have plans to do the three big main living rooms at our house, but I'm a little scared of the whole project. The last time we attempted to do floors we almost stopped speaking to each other...a whole other story, but still gives us the shudders. However, seeing your floors makes me want to jump in really soon and try it again. Thanks for the inspiration.

How I wish that there were hardwood floors lurking below the carpet in my great room. Sadly, we built the house 6 years ago and I know exactly what's under there.

Beautiful! It really completes the look of the entire room.

Do you have any tips about how you did the edges or worked around the fireplace hearth? We're considering laying our own wood or laminate floors, but I'm concerned it won't look professional at the edges or tansition areas.

Thanks for sharing!

Your floors look beautiful. I love hardwood floors. We got a deal on craigslist a couple of months ago on unfinished hardwood and it took us about a week to finish. We even did the stairs, taking out the carpet that was forever showing dirt and having to be cleaned.

We love our hardwood floors! They have been in 15 years and ever little ding just adds character, unlike when that happens to a carpet. Enjoy your new floors, Kim

Your hardwood flooring looks great :-) I can't believe you found the hardwood on Craigslist!!

We installed walnut flooring in our loft a few years ago. It came in random lengths, and it was like a jigsaw puzzle putting it all together. But as you said, the hard work is oh-so-worth it when you see the beautiful final result :-)
