The goal this year was:
1. Use what I have (as much as possible).
2. Keep it fun, colorful, and whimsical for the kids.
3. Make it glow.
4. Bring the outdoors in.
Did I achieve all of my goals?
I think so! And I love it.
And so do the kids, which is what really makes me happy!
I started with cedar garland. I cannot resist cedar at Christmas time. Cannot. It makes its way into our home every holiday season. I love how it looks, how it smells and how it ages over the month of December.
(Live greenery can be such a mess, but in my opinion, cedar is one of the least messy of all the evergreens!)
I buy it at Costco or at Fred Meyer, which sells 15' lengths for $14.99.
(This was my one purchase for this mantel. A must-have at a darn good price, if you ask me!)
Then I added a single strand of C-7 Christmas lights.
Want your mantel to glow? Use C-7's. You will not be disappointed!
Then I added some bead garland to add more pops of red into the overall look...
I bought this Advent Calendar last year at one of our local Holiday Bazaar's. It is made to stand on a table, but I wanted it to stay out of reach from little hands, so I added a sawtooth hanger on the back and hung it up here...
Next...the hanging ornaments.
My absolute favorite part!
I just used thin gift wrapping ribbon, looped through the top of each ornament. Then I used small, white thumbtacks to secure the ribbon to the ceiling...
The ornaments are shatterproof (ie: plastic), so if something should happen and they were to fall, I don't have to worry about broken glass across the hearth and wood floor...
I finished it off with my ribbon wrapped candles, and the J O Y sign that I made last year, to sneak in a little bit of that fresh lime green color...
and last, but certainly not least, our spot for the kids to put their letters to Santa...
My mother-in-law made our stockings for us year's ago, and as we added kids, she made more stockings. They are the perfect colors and fit in beautifully every Christmas...
Our inexpensive-use-what-you've-got-colorful-whimsical-glowing-cedar-loving-Christmas mantel.
Whew!
Now...time to sit down on our cozy couch with a mug of hot chocolate and a magazine, and enjoy it.
Happy Holidays!

Karla, this is one of the prettiest mantels I've ever laid eyes on! The greenery with the lights is amazing!
Do you worry about the lights and the drying greens together? That is my fear. But I was after this look!
Costco, eh? :)

I love it! So whimsical and fun. Your kids did a great job on the tree too.
It looks awesome! I love the Letters to Santa holder, how unique!
I love hanging ornaments like that. I keep glass ones up in my kitchen/dining room all year long. :)

Seriously cute...every mantel I've seen with ornaments hanging from the ceiling or frame or whatever are my favorites! Love your stockings too...
Been "following" your blog for a year or so now, I've finally become an offical follower. Your fireplace looks absolutely beautiful decorated for the holidays!
how darling! I am going to steal your hanging ornament Idea! I have a big black tv over my fireplace and have been wondering what to do ....now I am so excited. I love it!

Oh I really love it! Such a nice mix of childfriendly and grown-up gorgeous. You did a great job!
Fun for sure! I used fresh greens on our porch for the first time in a while, and after seeing your lovely cedar, I'm going back to add some to our mantel shelf. Lovely.
I used to just bookmark blogs and you were one the first I followed. Then my computer crashed and I couldn't remember any of the site I followed. I am so glad to have found you again through The Lettered Cottage. I am becoming a follower this time!
Thanks,
Laura
Oh I love cedar too, but alas, my DH is allergic to that and cats and while I have ignored his cat allergy, I just don't think he'd forgive me if I used cedar in the house!
Beautiful!

I love it all, but those red balls made me smile the most.
This is darling! I believe you met all your goals! I especially like how you have your advent calendar on the mantel!
So wishing my mantel was a 'real' mantel instead of a corner one with barely any room for a tv. :P
So jealous. Gorgeousness.

Nicely done. Great height with the red ornaments. Nice depth with the extra long cedar garland. Gee, you have great glow and I can almost smell how delicious that display might be.
And you say your kids are In Charge of the room? Ha! Brava to you. Great idea. Making wonderful memories.
We love Christmas :D
It looks like you have a ball decorating your mantels!!!! Thanks for sharing the beauty :)
