A New Venture For Us...

Something very exciting for us has happened and I am thrilled that I can finally share the details with you!

Three weeks ago I got a call from New York. It was the editor from AOL's DIY Life. She was calling to offer me the opportunity to come on board as a regular contributor and writer for their site.

(Insert squeals of excitement and laughter, here!)

After explaining to me all of the details, responsibilities and expectations...I couldn't refuse the offer! She had found me through my blog and loved what she saw!

(You can bet there was a whole lot of blushing involved...thank goodness she couldn't see me!)

So what can you expect to see from us on DIY Life?

To start, you'll be seeing previous projects that we have worked on and posted on ITLT, but the difference is that each post will be a "How To". A step-by-step process of how it was accomplished, with easy to follow directions.

First up, by request from my editor, the simple key holder that I made for our entryway by our garage...

It is an easy project that is totally customizable to your home's decor and a simple way to achieve the exact look you want for very little cash!

(You can see my original post about it, here)

You can check it out over on DIY Life:

Homemade: Scrabble Key Holder

Our next article...

A "How To" for our Living Room Fireplace Makeover.

We have received many emails about the details of this project, so an in depth post is definitely in order. I'll let you know when it's published!

We will also be working on brand new projects that will be featured on DIY Life. We have some big ones planned for 2010 and we can't wait to get started on them!

In March, DIY Life will be relaunching with a whole new look and feel and I am so excited to be a part of it. If you have never visited DIY Life (part of the AOL Network) head over and browse around. It's packed with useful tips, good information, craft projects, reviews and How To's. Chances are, if you're visiting ITLT, then DIY Life is right up your alley!

Enjoy!

Our New Addition...

It has been days since I've posted.

Sorry for the disappearance.

But I have good reason.

I would like to introduce you to...

Scout

Awww...

Isn't he so cute?

We just got him on Friday.

He's a Blue Merle Corgi and he's 3/4 Corgi and 1/4 Chihuahua.

He's such a good little guy.

It took a lot of time and research to find him. We wanted the right dog for our family. Not just the first puppy we saw and fell in love with - because, let's face it...all puppies are easy to fall in love with, right?
(We made that mistake several years ago and learned our lesson the hard way, promising ourselves never to let it happen again.)

We headed up to Bellingham on Friday morning - a two hour drive - and met with a breeder, intending to see Scout's sister. I had decided a couple of months ago that when we did finally decide on a dog, that it would be a girl. But once we got to the breeder's farm, it became clear that she wasn't right for us at all...
but he was perfect.

We decided on his name on the long car ride home and it fits him to a T.

We couldn't have asked for a better Valentine!

Owen is in heaven - he's been talking about getting a dog ever since...well, ever since he could talk.

William loves having a furry little companion.

And Ellison, hmm...I'll just say that her intense fear of dogs is rapidly subsiding. She's fallen in love with him.

Having Scout is good for her!

I'm sure you'll be seeing more of him. He's too cute not to snap photos of!

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

I hope it was wonderful.

P.S. Will and I found a great deal on Craigslist yesterday! I'll tell you all about it and show you our plans soon. It's a project that we've never tackled before, but have been wanting to try for a long, long time. And it will definitely make for some great before and after photos!

Calling all beach lovers!

If you have yet to discover Maya and her blog, Completely Coastal, well then...you're just plain missing out!

It is one of my favorites.

Am I allowed to say that?

Oh - who cares!

I'm saying it...

Completely Coastal is one of my favorite blogs! It is one of my go-to spots to browse and gain endless amounts of beachy inspiration.

Here are a few images to tease you with, and a glimpse into what you will find when you visit Completely Coastal...

(Could I see myself living there? Oh yeah!)

Maya's old wooden door...transformed into art - sitting pretty next to her weathered oars.

Gorgeous images of coastal homes...

and book reviews to gain even more insight into living life on the coast
(even if you don't)...

She does the leg work for you, finding beach house decor to fit even the most discriminating coastal style...

So cute...right?

A little about Maya, in her own words:

"My name is Maya, I'm Swiss, and together with my husband I live in an old Dutch Colonial home in coastal Rhode Island. I love the coastal life style, the sea and all the fabulous things that depict its beauty and essence.

At Completely Coastal you will find selected Nautical and Beach Theme Products for the Home, including handmade Decor by Artists and Artisans, Posters and Prints, Books and a fun feature called Create The Look. You can browse beautiful Interiors, get inspired by great Craft Project Ideas, read about Movies, check out Coastal Homes, and on occasion I publish something about My Coastal Home. I hope you enjoy and celebrate the Sea with me!"

If you have never paid Maya a visit (or even if you have), head over to Completely Coastal to see what's new. I promise that you won't be disappointed.

But wait...

there's more!

Maya is hosting a giveaway that you're not going to want to miss.

Head over to Completely Coastal to see Maya's Giveaway from Artist Shari Curtiss who runs an Etsy Shop called Beach Grass Cottage.

Enter for your chance to win a $40 Gift Certificate.

My favorites from Beach Grass Cottage:

these solid wood Beach Buoys...

and this gorgeous Seashell Picture Frame with Shark Eye Beach Shells...

A $40 Gift Certificate would go a long way towards getting both!

There are many more items to choose from, but you'll have to visit Maya to get the whole scoop.

And just in case you can't seem to think of a place in your home to set a wooden buoy or a seashell frame...I can! So go ahead and throw your entry in the hat for me!

(kidding!)

(sort of)

Enjoy your visit to Completely Coastal and...

Good luck to all who enter the Giveaway!

Look What Alena Did...

Check it out!

Yesterday I received a comment on my post from last week called:

A "How To", A "How Not To", And A Find That Knocked My Socks Off

(about removing some cabinet doors in my kitchen and turning it into a pretty display area)

and I just had to share it with you.

It came from Alena who writes a blog called

Our Fabuless Life

How cute is this?

She said:

"Loved the idea!! Just finished it over the weekend. I blogged about it over at www.ourfabulesslife.blogspot.com and gave you some big shout outs!!

Thanks, I LOVE HOW IT LOOKS!!!"

After seeing my post, Alena felt inspired to dig out her husbands electric screwdriver and take matters into her own hands. Where she once had cabinet doors...

she now has a beautiful display cabinet, lined with...(what else?)...adhesive gift wrap!

I think it looks great - and Alena, I love that green!

Great job! And thanks for sharing!

To see how Alena accomplished the look, check out her blog:

Our Fabuless Life

.................................................................................................

I love to see what projects my readers have been up to in an effort to make their
house a home.

If you have seen a post here on ITLT, and felt inspired to recreate the look, or make it your own, send me some pictures. I would love to see them. And you never know...

I just might feature you on my blog!

................................................................................................

Thanks again, Alena!

I can't wait to see what you do next!

Owen's New Room - The Big Reveal...

A quick recap of why this room was up for a makeover in the first place:

August 2007 - We move into this house and Will and Owen share a bedroom - just as they always have.

December 2008 - William turns 7 and begins asking for his own bedroom. Begging would probably be a more accurate description. (Keep in mind, we're a family of five living in a three bedroom house. There isn't a bedroom for him to move into.)

Summer 2009 - We remodel our rarely used (that's an understatement) Dining Room and it becomes the new Playroom for the kids and all of their toys.

Autumn 2009 - We begin to see the light (and are tiring from the 8 months of begging) - the benefits of William having his own room begin to outweigh the boys sharing a room any longer.

Over the course of a day, our Dining Room-turned-Playroom now becomes our homes 4th bedroom.

And that about sums it up.

Owen had a rough time sleeping alone in a bedroom without his big brother, so I did all that I could to show him how exciting it could be to have a place to call his own.

His very own.

For Christmas, the boys got to pick out new bedding that would serve as the jumping off point for the theme of their individual rooms. It was no surprise that Owen's choice was all about cars, planes, trucks and trains...

By sheer luck, the colors in the quilt perfectly matched the blues that I had painted on the walls two years prior. That saved me lots of time and money! I decided that we should use our energy elsewhere and build Owen a custom storage system in his closet that would house all of his...stuff.

Owen is a builder. A Do-er. An inventor.

As a result, he has lots of stuff...

Once his closet was done, I moved on to finishing the room.

I love how it turned out. I was able to re-use things that had previously been in the boys' room, but, to keep it exciting, switch it all up to look new and fresh for Owen.

Welcome to

Owen's "New" Room
...

Owen's "fort bed", with peek holes so that he can spy and see who's coming.

One of these days I will get around to painting words in between the ladder steps that say:

What's

The Secret

Password?

Vintage airline magazine advertisements from the 1940's...

Another vintage magazine advertisement for Beech Aircraft...

My Dad's old school books...

Owen made a paper chain for Christmas that he couldn't bear to throw away...

It is the perfect decoration for inside his fort.

A spot for all of his art...

Will always tries to tell me "Function over form!"

But I disagree. I think I have managed to make Owen's room function perfectly for him, while still satisfying my need to have a nice, pretty (we won't tell Owen that I just said that!) organized and cozy bedroom.

Even though it's Owen's room, we all love to be in there.

We play board games together. We read books. Owen is always building a new track...or two.

I think that's the best compliment I could hope for...

watching my family enjoy the rooms that I create.

It makes all of the time and effort that it takes to make it happen, more than worth it!
